Modern American education has, in many ways, destroyed a student’s love for learning.

Ask just about any student why they go to school and they will say, “to get a good job some day.” While this is certainly true (it’s difficult to work if you don’t have basic educational skills), it doesn’t answer the greater purpose of education.

The answer, of course, is to become more human, gain a curiosity for the world around you, and learn from the great minds that came before you.

At Higdon Literacy Solutions, we believe that students should love learning, be encouraged to become voracious readers, and learn the art of critical thinking from a young age.

Whether you’re looking for enrichment or intervention for your child, we’re here to help. Each literacy plan is tailored to a student’s individual needs and interests, with the goal of fostering a student’s curiosity and love of learning.

About the Founder

Brittany L .Higdon, M.Ed. is a life-long educator with over 13 years of experience working with students of all ages as a teacher and special education interventionist. While she’s certainly not a classical education purist, she is a self-described bookworm who sees the extreme value in teaching timeless literature to students of all ages.

What is “Literacy Coaching?”

A coach is someone who helps someone realize their own potential, discover their gifts and use them in the best way possible. While many would call what we do “tutoring,” it’s a lot more nuanced and complex than a simple transmission of knowledge.

A Classical Spin

Modern mainstream education has been pushing a problematic agenda that we believe needs to be stopped at the grassroots level. A December 2020 Wall Street Journal article entitled, “Even Homer Gets Mobbed” shed light on the educational system’s agenda to discredit seemingly all great works of literature.

While we at Literacy Solutions certainly aren’t classical education purists, we do see extreme value in reading authors whose works have stood the test of time for a reason. We often incorporate great works in our sessions, from Homer to Harper Lee.

“A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read.”
